Elvis Presley Concert Poster of the “The Big One” at the Denver Auditorium Sought by by Rock Concert Poster Collector
Andrew Hawley, of Vintage Rock Posters, moved to Denver in fall of 2010. After 15 years in Los Angles, he wanted a change in scenery and missed having four seasons. He wanted to live in a large city with access to the mountains. Andrew is actively searching for concert posters of some of the greatest rock n’ roll acts held in Denver in the 1950s and 1960s. The Elvis Presley “The Big One” show held at the Denver Auditorium on April 8th, 1956 is of particular interest. It seems that many Elvis concerts in 1956 were controversial and his Denver show is no exception.
According to Hawley, “The show was called the “The Big One”. Wanda Jackson , the “Queen of Rockabilly” and Faron Young, the “Hillbilly Heartthrob” shared the stage with Elvis. Tickets ranged from $1.20 to $1.50. Kids got in for 50 cents. There were two shows that day. The concert was held at the Denver Auditorium and was sponsored by Metropolitan Pontiac. Tickets were sold at local drug stores, gas stations, and record stores.” Hawley adds, “The show was reviewed negatively by Frances Melrose a news writer for the “Rocky Mountain News”. Melrose did not care for the Elvis fans at the show either. The News was deluged with phone calls and letters-to-the editor from fans who disagreed with her assessment of the Elvis Presley and rock ‘n’ roll. Most fan responses to the Melrose article were polite but some were much stronger. Elvis and his rock ‘n’ roll music introduced Denver’s teens to the freedom from conformity to the great concern of some Denver adults and parents. Controversy followed Elvis as he continued his toured across the country in 1956 and later 1957.”
Hawley continues, “Elvis Presley concert posters are great examples of nonconformity and this is what makes them popular. Elvis posters printed in 1956 typically use bold bright colors with images of the singer. Classic rock concert posters remind people who were alive in those times of their youth. It makes people who were not alive then wish they were.”
