A recent report by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) noted a decline in motorcycle fatalities from 2009 to 2010.Read the Rest...

A recent report by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) noted a decline in motorcycle fatalities from 2009 to 2010. The GHSA, however, viewed this negatively because 2010 saw a drop of only 2 percent after a 16 percent decline in motorcycle deaths in 2009. Additionally, while the first two quarters saw a decline in deaths caused by motorcycle accidents, the third quarter actually saw an increase.

The study looked at data from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, and found fatality statistics all across the board, with the reasons for increases or decreases differing from state to state.

The report noted that use of motorcycle helmets also declined in 2010, with only a little over half of all motorcycle riders wearing helmets. Despite the decrease in both fatalities and helmet use, however, the study did not draw a correlation between the two.

After an Accident

Motorcycle accidents can be serious with few safety measures between the driver and the cement. Cars and other vehicles have more safety measures such as seatbelts, airbags and anti-lock braking systems. As a result, it is obvious why injuries and death are more prevalent in motorcycle crashes. In fact, motorcycle accidents account for 20 percent of all driving fatalities.

Someone involved in an accident might be nervous or in a state of shock. However, it is important to remain as calm as possible. There are many steps people must take, but often understandably forget, when involved in an accident:
-Check for injuries after moving safely to the side of the road, but someone with potential neck or spine injuries should only be moved by trained medical personnel
-Call 911 as a detailed police report can be helpful for a qualified motorcycle accident attorney to assess the situation and potential claims
-Photograph the scene to create an accurate record of the crash site
-Exchange personal and insurance information if a second vehicle or cyclist was involved

Motorcycle accidents are an unfortunate reality of driving American roads. Regrettably many of these accidents result in serious bodily injury or death. However, there are resources available for individuals and families affected by such a crash so they may begin putting their lives back together.

Anyone having questions or who has been involved in a crash should speak with an experienced personal injury attorney with motorcycle accident experience immediately to discuss their options moving forward, as well as an honest analysis of their claims.

My Girlfriends House, Inc. was hoping to give away 500 purses filled with life’s necessities to at-risk young ladies and women in the Washington metropolitan area. Halfway through a month-long drive to solicit purse donations, the group has already shattered that goal.

“Last year we distributed 300 purses as part of our Purse Strings drive,” said My Girlfriends House executive director, Veronica Eyenga. “When we decided to try for 500, I thought that was an almost impossibly ambitious goal. The amount of support we’ve received is incredible: we’re approaching 600 purses already.”

The largest donation came from Beauty-In-A-Purse, a Maryland-based organization that helps women whose lives have been impacted by homelessness, domestic violence and incarceration. “We’re excited to be a part of My Girlfriends House’s Purse Strings Drive, said BIAP founder, Lanitra Jackson, as BIAP donated 200 purses. “”I understand the commitment and impact of the work of My Girlfriend’s House and this was BIAP way of facilitating those efforts to enhance the self-image of at-risk girls and women.”

The next challenge, according to Eyenga, will be to stuff the purses with health and beauty aids and personal care items. “We’re currently seeking monetary and in-kind donations to fill the purses,” she noted. “We’ve received some corporate and foundation support, and we’re aggressively seeking more.”

The annual Purse Strings Drive, which benefits high school students as well as women in area homeless shelters, halfway houses and other facilities and programs, is only part of the organization’s services, Eyenga noted: the group’s primary focus is to mentor at-risk young ladies to help them succeed in school and the workplace, and support them with the Purse Strings drive, college scholarships, clothing and school supplies. “By working with middle and high school students, we can help them rise above their circumstances in every aspect of life,” Eyenga noted. “We all had help along the way, and we appreciate the support we’re getting to help us give back to the young ladies who need it most.”

Lookouts scan the horizon, searching for any boat or vessel that looks out of place, careful eyes watch the radar screen. The entire crew is on edge; radio chatter between ships is nearly constant. Fishing vessels, normally a routine part of ocean travel, get extra scrutiny and wide passage. Any small boat approaching the ship sets off alarm bells.

Anyone who makes their living on the sea knows these waters, one of the corridors of global commerce for as long man has been writing things down, are a dangerous place to travel. Ships transiting these waters to the Red Sea are exposed to virtually the entire coast of Somalia, home to fleets of modern day pirates.

2010 was a bumper year for the pirates with 53 ships seized, 1,181 crew members taken hostage along with their ships and cargo. Eight people lost their lives.

Shipping supply companies are getting more requests for gear to keep their customer crews safe and to combat ocean-going piracy. One of those steps is supplying crews that travel these dangerous waters with EnGarde Marine Tactical Kits.

The kits, which can be tailored to the company’s budget, include tactical helmets, and body armor that runs from models capable of stopping small arms fire to full cover tactical bullet proof vests with hard armor panels capable of stopping rounds from AK-47s and grenade fragments.

Companies like Seaway Marine Trading BV, Wave.Co Supply, and EuroSupply Bergen AS are now stocking products to supply protection from the small arms and rocket propelled grenades that are the weapons of choice for roving bands of Somali pirates.

EnGarde has seen a surge in interest in their marine tactical kits as shipping companies look to provide more safety options for crews working in potentially hostile waters.

Offering protective body armor like the EnGarde Patrol, EnGarde Leopard, and EnGarde Panther protective vests that provide the capability of accepting either EnGarde DYNEEMA Level III inserts capable of stopping small arms fire or EnGarde Aramid/Ceramic Level IV hard armor plates capable of surviving fire from larger caliber light armor piercing bullets and grenade fragments. Body armor, coupled with an EnGarde PASGT or MICH helmets, crews are better protected from small arms and RPGs.

EnGarde tactical marine kits and ballistic blankets are available at price points to fit most budgets and provide various levels of protection to fit whatever situations ship captains may encounter in dangerous waters.

EnGarde body armor is a Dutch manufacturer and distributor of high quality body armor for law enforcement, military and civilians worldwide.

It is one thing to want breast augmentation with breast implants to improve your figure, but it’s another to actually see what you look like with them. All women who want breast implants may see pictures of women with breasts like they want, and try to visualize what they will look like. Using bags filled with rice, breast implants fitted inside bras, and more might help a little, but are ultimately a poor substitute for many women.

Many plastic surgeons request their breast augmentation patients bring pictures of women with the shape and size of breasts they want to their consultation. The plastic surgeon will also have a gallery of the work he or she has done on past patients. Matching physique and breasts will help the current patient visualize even further what her breasts may look like after breast surgery.
However, going even further, some plastic surgeons offer 3-D breast imaging. This allows the patient to see what they will look like through a digital 3-D imaging program.

Vectra Breast Imaging

The Vectra 3-D Breast Imaging program allows breast implant patients to actually see what breast implants can do for their figure with the touch of a button. Using 3-D scans of your body from multiple angles, the Vectra program will calculate your breast dimensions, analyze the different size of breasts for your physique, and then determine which breast implant size is compatible. You may view several different sizes to see what they will look like.

During and after the 3-D breast imaging, you will discuss breast implant shape and size with your plastic surgeon. They will help you decide on the best possible result. The program will also help you communicate better with your doctor, as they can actually show you on the image what they mean. Knowing how you will look after your breast implant surgery goes a long way in educating you and setting you at east before your surgery date.

If you would like to learn more about 3-D breast imaging, please visit the website of experienced Houston, Texas plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Ciaravino today at www.thebodydoc.com.

Nearly 1 in 2 Americans (i.e. 133 million) develop a chronic illness.* What are the causes of this phenomenon? Contributing co-factors, literally “a perfect storm” scenario combine to compromise our health. A few of the “Ten Root Causes” include: genetic predisposition, physical or emotional trauma, internal or external toxins, and even hormone imbalance. When we are suffering we clamor for do-able, action-able hints and ideas about how to improve our own health. We may have a general idea that eating better and exercising can help us to feel better, however we may not realize the transformational power of rebuilding the body from the inside out. Where do we begin to reclaim our health?

Susan Ingebretson, in FibroWHYalgia, offers a complete tool-box for rebuilding wellness for the body-mind-spirit. Ingebretson imparts her own successful journey to wellness as inspiration. She serves as a navigator for individuals who need tools to find their way back to better health. Included in the book are sections on eating for wellness, alternative therapies, and how to use exercise to go “from sick and tired, to fit and inspired.” “FibroWHYalgia is like having an intimate conversation with a friend who has been through battle and is now sharing tools and tips from the trenches,” says one fan. Physician and health activist Dr. Joseph Mercola refers to the book as “a practical resource guide.”

Committed to helping others afflicted with chronic illness, Ingebretson is a respected educator. She is an Holistic Health Counselor and director of program development for the Fibromyalgia Research and Education Center at California State University, Fullerton. Ingebretson has collaborated in community educational projects, local support groups and the National Fibromyalgia Association (NFA). Ingebretson will soon release the Second Edition of FibroWHYalgia, and two workbooks FibroWHYalgia: The Workbook, and The Genesis Approach. Ingebretson’s writing has appeared in FibromyalgiaAWARE, Fibromyalgia Alternative News and she was featured in the March 2011 issue of FIRST for Women.

Last March a New York City tour bus fell off an elevated highway at 78 mph, struck a utility pole and killed 15 people. Authorities are still investigating the crash, with one passenger reporting the driver fell asleep at the wheel. After that tragedy a quick succession of traffic incidents involving buses caused increased concern for bus safety and commercial drivers in general. As one measure in response to those concerns, New York began an investigation of the validity of licenses for commercial drivers.

Law enforcement officials and the New York Department of Motor Vehicles are using facial recognition technology to catch individuals with more than one license. Over 3,000 people have been caught since the new technology was implemented last year and 600 have been arrested on felony charges.

Of those arrested, 173 drove commercial vehicles, such as buses, taxis and large trucks. These commercial drivers use additional licenses to either get more benefits or to hide previous traffic violations like driving under the influence arrests or other traffic violations. As of this writing, law enforcement officials removed approximately 100 bus drivers and 100 buses from New York roads.

In addition to the crackdown in New York, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced in May new measures aimed at preventing unsafe tour bus companies and drivers from getting on the road. Tour bus companies will now have to pass an audit before being allowed to operate, and new bus driver licenses will now require the possessor to first have a learner’s permit.

Accidents Involving Buses Pose Great Risk

Because of their size and lack of safety features, accidents involving buses can cause catastrophic injuries to both its passengers and other vehicles on the road. A worst-case scenario such as the tragedy in March may result in the deaths of multiple passengers. Unfortunately, hundreds of people die each year in bus accidents, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

If you have been involved in a traffic accident speak with a personal injury lawyer. While no one can take back the accident, an experienced personal injury attorney may be able to help you get compensation for medical expenses, wage loss and other expenses that will allow you to focus on recuperation.

Rental car companies in Florida are not financially responsible for accidents involving customers driving the company’s vehicles, according to the Florida Supreme Court.

The court, in Rafael Vargas v. Enterprise Leasing Co., threw out a Florida law that said that rental companies could be liable for up to $500,000 when a customer caused an accident while driving a rental car. The court said the Florida law was preempted, or rendered ineffective, by a federal government law that says transportation companies are not financially responsible when a leased vehicle is involved in a wreck.

The court said that the federal Graves Amendment prohibits states from imposing “vicarious liability” on rental car companies. In Florida, the owner of a car may be liable if the car is involved in an accident. Long term leases, that run for more than a year, specify that the person leasing the vehicle from a car dealership is considered the “owner” for purposes of the law.

But the law regarding shorter term rentals, such as vacation or business trip leases, previously defined the “owner” of the vehicle as the car rental agency. This ruling makes it clear that the agency, even though it owns the car, is not responsible for the driver’s negligence.

Rental companies can still be responsible if the injured person proves that the company was negligent in renting the car to the person responsible for the accident. The rental company may also be liable if the accident is caused by a mechanical problem with the car. But, the court said, rental companies are off the hook when it comes to financial responsibility solely because they own the car.

In most circumstances, rental companies offer insurance to people leasing cars from the company. If the driver buys that rental insurance, the insurance company is responsible for damages in case of an accident. In many cases, rental drivers who have their own car insurance on a personal vehicle are also covered by those policies while driving rental cars.

With the holiday season quickly approaching, millions of Americans are making their travel plans to visit family, friends, or just to get away. The period ranging from Thanksgiving to New Years is one of the busiest times of the year for airports, bus stations, and highways.

According to a recent American Express survey, three out of ten Americans plan on travelling this holiday season—that’s over 90 million people on the move. What’s even more interesting is that 42% of travelers said they would spend more on travel this year versus the last several years.

Many of these travel arrangements will be made online. Travel sites that allow consumers to compare airlines, hotels, and even rental car prices have been around for years and allow savvy users to find some of the best deals available.

Although the style and content of the sites may appear universal at first glance, there are considerable differences. Booking options, fees, and ease of use all vary between even the largest travel sites. Still, it takes long enough to compare airfare, let alone the sites providing it. That’s where Pikimal comes in. They’ve done the legwork for you and compiled a simple and customizable top ten list of the best travel websites. The list, along with explanations of rankings, is available at travel-website.pikimal.com.

The top ten travel sites according to Pikimal:
1. Expedia
2. Orbitz
3. OneTravel
4. Priceline
5. Travelocity
6. LastMinuteTravel
7. AirGorilla
8. Smarter Travel
9. CheapoAir
10. CheapTickets

Pikimal is Pittsburgh based and founded in February 2010. We plan to separate great products from great marketing and make decision-making simple and collaborative. We allow users to pick nearly anything and determine what about that product or topic matters specifically to them.

TV presenter and adventurer Ben Fogle announced the winners of the first ever National Geographic Kids Adventure Awards at the National Geographic Store on London’s Regent Street yesterday.

Ben presented nine-year-old Jake Allen-Brunn, from Ludlow in Shropshire, with the National Geographic Kids Young Adventurer Of The Year award. Jake also wins a holiday in Nepal from family adventure travel specialists The Adventure Company.

Ben, who is The Adventure Company’s Brand Ambassador, said: “Jake’s spirit of adventure totally shone through in his winning poem. I loved the message in his last verse that ‘you can have adventures anywhere; faraway or close to home, with friends or family or on your own,’ which mirrors my own approach to adventure. I’m sure his prize of a family holiday to Nepal’s incredible Himalayas will inspire him in his quest to become an adventurer of the future.”

Nine other Adventure Awards winners were also revealed at the ceremony, with wildlife expert Sir David Attenborough winning the accolade of The World’s Greatest Explorer and Deadly 60 presenter, Steve Backshall, scooping The Most Adventurous Celebrity award.

In other categories, the Indiana Jones series jointly won Best Adventure Film Of All Time, with Michael Morpurgo’s Running Wild taking first place in the Best Adventure Book Of All Time category.

Longleat Safari & Adventure Park was voted Best Adventure Destination (British Isles), while South Africa was voted Best International Adventure Destination and Donkey Kong Country Returns took first place as Best Adventure Game.

The 300 guests at the ceremony were also treated to a talk by Ben about some of the adventures featured in his new book, The Accidental Adventurer: My Wilderness Years.

Speaking of the prize, Fogle added: “Nepal is one of those magical countries where the names of its most famous sites alone – such as Kathmandu and the foothills of the Himalayas – conjure up images of great adventure. In an action-packed fortnight the Young Adventurer Of The Year and his family will have the chance to explore rural villages and interact with the friendly Nepalese, enjoy jaw-dropping views across snow-capped peaks and get close to the animals both on an elephant-back safari and in a dugout canoe. Adventure really doesn’t have to be purely adrenaline-focused or involve spending months sailing across the ocean so, for me, this inspiring itinerary has all the perfect ingredients for the adventure of a lifetime.”

The National Geographic Kids Young Adventurer Of The Year winner and runners-up are all available for interview.
